Brake Pads and Rotors Replacement Cost

Per-axle budget for a pads-and-rotors (brake disc) job versus pads only, front, rear or both axles — with a slot for your own resurfacing quote. Built on CarCalTune’s brake model.

Quick answer

In this model, brake pads and rotors replacement costs about $290–$530 per axle with standard pads ($580–$1,060 for both axles). Pads only on the same axle is $140–$230, so rotors add $150–$300 per axle. Premium pads move a one-axle pads-and-rotors job to $330–$600. All figures are illustrative U.S. budgeting assumptions, not national averages — local labor rates and rotor type change the price.

The model prices front and rear axles the same; your quote may not.

Pads only vs pads and rotors: computed table

Computed with Calcs.brakePadsRotors in js/calcs.js (pads $40–$80 standard / $80–$150 premium per axle, labor $100–$150 per axle, rotor add-on $150–$300 per axle). Midpoint = (low + high) ÷ 2. Illustrative U.S. budget assumptions — not quotes.
JobPad qualityLowHighMidpoint
One axle, pads onlyStandard$140$230$185
One axle, pads + rotorsStandard$290$530$410
Both axles, pads onlyStandard$280$460$370

One axle, pads + rotorsPremium$330$600$465
Both axles, pads onlyPremium$360$600$480
Both axles, pads + rotorsPremium$660$1,200$930

Rotor share of the bill (our arithmetic): at the midpoint, rotors are 54.9% of a standard one-axle pads-and-rotors job ($225 of $410) and 48.4% with premium pads ($225 of $465). That is why the rotor decision matters more than the pad brand.

Rotors every pad job vs every other pad job

Two pad jobs on one axle, standard pads. Same model; our computation.
Rotor policy over two pad jobsLowHighMidpoint
New rotors both times (2 × pads + rotors)$580$1,060$820
New rotors once (pads + rotors, then pads only)$430$760$595
Difference$150$300$225

If a shop recommends rotors at every visit, ask for the measured thickness and the minimum stamped on the rotor. Skipping one unnecessary rotor set saves the full add-on.

Brake budget per 10,000 miles (computed)

One axle, standard pads, midpoints from the tables above spread over a pad life of 30,000–70,000 miles (the range on our brake pad page). Our arithmetic; your pad life depends on driving and vehicle weight.
PolicyCost over two pad livesPer 10k mi at 30k pad lifePer 10k mi at 70k pad life
Pads only, rotors last$370$61.67$26.43
Rotors every other pad job$595$99.17$42.50
Rotors every pad job$820$136.67$58.57

Worked example: front pads and rotors, standard pads

Input: front axle, standard pads, resurfacing quoted at $X per axle.

  1. Pads: Calcs.brakePads(1, 'standard') → $40–$80 parts + $100–$150 labor = $140–$230
  2. Rotor add-on: 1 × ($150–$300) = $150–$300
  3. Pads + rotors: $140 + $150 = $290 low; $230 + $300 = $530 high; midpoint $410
  4. Resurface check: pads-only midpoint $185 + your $X, compared with $410 for new rotors

Expected output: $290–$530 (estimate). Resurfacing only beats replacement in this model when your quote is under the $225 rotor midpoint and the rotor stays above minimum thickness after machining.

Front vs rear brakes

Front and rear pads often wear at different rates, so one axle at a time is normal. The model prices any single axle the same; rear axles with an integrated parking brake or electronic parking brake may need extra steps, so compare your written quote line by line. For pads-only pricing by quality, see the brake pad replacement cost calculator.

Estimate basis & methodology

Pad and labor bands come from Calcs.brakePads; the rotor add-on of $150–$300 per axle is the assumption CarCalTune’s brake pad page has used since launch, now coded as Calcs.brakePadsRotors. These are illustrative U.S. budgeting assumptions, not verified national averages, insurance payouts or dealer invoices. We do not publish chain or brand prices that the brand has not published itself.

Limitations

  • Calipers, brake hoses, fluid flushes and sensors are not included.
  • Performance, big-brake, heavy-truck and many European models run above these bands.
  • Rotor minimum thickness is vehicle-specific; it is stamped on the rotor or listed in the service manual.

FAQ

How much does it cost to replace brake pads and rotors?

In CarCalTune's budgeting model, pads and rotors on one axle cost about $290–$530 with standard pads and $330–$600 with premium pads. Both axles are $580–$1,060 standard or $660–$1,200 premium. These are illustrative U.S. planning assumptions, not national averages — get a written quote.

How much more is pads and rotors than pads only?

The rotor add-on in our model is $150–$300 per axle, so a front pads-and-rotors job ($290–$530) is about $150–$300 more than front pads only ($140–$230). At the midpoint, rotors are about 55% of a standard pads-and-rotors bill.

What is the brake disc replacement cost?

Brake discs are the same part as rotors. Our model adds $150–$300 per axle for a pair of discs including the extra labor, on top of the pad job. Performance and large-truck rotors can cost more than this band.

Should I resurface or replace my rotors?

Rotors can only be machined if they stay above the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor or listed in the service manual. If your shop quotes resurfacing, enter that per-axle price in the calculator to compare it with the model's replacement add-on; if the rotor is already near minimum thickness, replacement is the usual answer.

Do I need new rotors every time I replace pads?

Not necessarily. Replace rotors when they are scored, warped or below minimum thickness. In our model, replacing rotors on every pad job instead of every other one costs about $225 more per axle over two pad jobs at the midpoint ($820 vs $595).
